KEYNOTE: Wouldn’t It Be Nice if Things Worked That Way? - This presentation pokes a bit of fun at ourselves and Oracle. In the midst of our hectic day-to-day world, Michael always finds a way to lighten up the perspective and offer new ways of looking at ourselves and this wonderful software we call Oracle.

Michael S. Abbey is a frequent presenter at technical events in North America and Europe. He has accumulated an avid following in the Oracle user group community, having served on the board of directors of the IOUG from 1992 until 2000. Michael was re-elected to the Board in the 2002 election process, and was responsible for the delivery of Live! 2004 in Toronto. Michael is co-author of 12 successful works in the Oracle Press series, the most recent being Oracle Database 10g: A Beginner's Guide. Since 1999, he has been the technical lead for the remote DBA team at the Pythian Group in Canada's capital.

Neat Things to Help Manage Partitioned Objects - When we embark on a course involving management of partitioned objects, we are all so keen and eager to implement all of the theory we have in our heads. Once we get started, we find a plethora of syntactical limits that interfere with the way in which we planned to implement our approach. This presentation will examine some tricks used during partition maintenance operations that, for example, do not invalidate global indexes. In addition, this presentation will offer assistance in building locally partitioned indexes and naming the containers with the same convention adopted for your tables. It will cover the author’s approach to naming conventions, and show attendees why partition object management is fraught with many obstacles, most of which are not difficult to circumvent.

I Love the Java Jive: J2EE Overview for Oracle Technologists - Lately, Oracle has been spending a large amount of time and resources implementing concepts published in the Sun Microsystems Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) specifications. Oracle customers must have a handle on the technology and options available in this relatively new world if we are to take advantage of current and future technologies. J2EE offers a myriad of possibilities and dizzying number of new acronyms. This presentation is aimed at explaining these to the Oracle technologist who well understands the "traditional" world of relational database design, development, and administration but who needs a quick tour of the Java J2EE landscape and a simple explanation of its terms and features. The presentation puts J2EE in perspective with Microsoft's offering .NET and discusses web deployment alternatives such as servlet and JSP pages as well as Java client alternatives. Finally, Oracle's product offerings in the Java space are outlined.

Peter Koletzke is a Technical Director and Principal Instructor for the Enterprise e.Commerce practice at Quovera, in Redwood Shores, CA (http://www.quovera.com/.)
